The Montaione hills have been inhabited
since ancient times. The Etruscans were amongst the first
peoples to populate the area, followed by a period of Roman
colonisation. The first reference to Montaione is made
in a document dated 981 A.D., where it is mentioned as
Mons Allonis, from the Longobard Allone, lord of Lucca.
The first definite reference to Montaione as a walled town
can be traced back to 1257.
Collelungo is an ancient farming hamlet, known since Medieval
times as a community from the area of Tonda, situated on
an elongated hill from whence the hamlet derives its name
(colle lungo = long hill) and overlooking the valley of
Evola.
The present accommodation structure was opened in 1996
and since then has welcomed more than 7000 guests from
all over the world.
